Information

One in 3 of us living in the highlands will be affected by cancer either personally or through a relative…….

This event has been inspired by one persons journey in battling to regain full health after breast cancer. As everyone knows, who has undergone the gruelling regime of chemotherapy it is hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future that keep you strong:

“My journey has required sometimes long stays in both The Belford Hospital, Fort William and The Oncology Ward at Raigmore Hospital. During the early stages of my treatment when returning to normality seemed a million miles away I dreamt of being able to ‘give up’ some of my time towards raising monies that could help support the care of cancer patients requiring hospital admissions in the highland area along with the care offered by the local MacMillan team. I feel very privileged that I now have the opportunity to achieve my goal and invite you too, to ‘give up’ your Saturday in support of cancer in the highlands”.
(Sharon Fraser, Lochaber).

We’ve worked hard to bring you an exciting new Duathlon (that is a run, a jog or a walk and a cycle any combination counts). A couple of factors influenced our decision for the venue. First off, we wanted to provide you with an interesting a scenic route with a ONE LOOP bike course. Secondly, we wanted to incorporate some variety of terrain in the event.

Special thanks to Health Board in supporting the Event

Which class should I enter????

  • Elite Duathlon: For those who like to compete, regular runners and mountain bikers. If you expect to finish within 1hr 45 mins
  • Sports: For those who like to jog now and again and maybe a wee run on the bike, you know you should get out more but just never seem top find the time. If youexpect to finish within 2hrs 45 mins
  • Leisure Class: Its not a race, for those who just want to get out and take part and have a good chat on the way round. Expect to finish in 3hrs 45 mins
  • Walk Only: If cycling is not for you the walk only class (we do not discriminate against runners) allows participants the option of a 3.5mile or a 12.5mile option. Expect to finish within 5hrs

Course

Based on the Edinburgh Moon Walk, the route for this walk will be around Fort William and Glen Nevis - approximately 14 miles.

The location at Lochaber Leisure centre is ideal, it is easily accessible and there is access to all facilities.

The Run Jog Walk is a loop around the Cow Hill a distance of 3 .5 miles and the Cycle is in Glen Nevis from Braveheart car park to the head of the glen and back a total distance of 9 miles.

The Run Jog Walk section is without doubt one of the most scenic routes in the highlands with Vistas of Loch eil and Loch Linnihie and then Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis. The route is off road so there are no traffic issues and the trails are good.

The Cycle is either forest road or tar through Glen Nevis, please adhere to highway code whilst on the tar section.

Rules

1 Participants must be 15 years old on the day of the event. (please note any adult who wishes to be accompanied by a child is welcome to do so but has responsibility for the child.)

2 All riders must stay to the right of their lane at all times other than passing. Please be courteous to the other riders on the course, ride in a straight line and stay right.. There will not be a water bottle hand off on the bicycle course so participants should carry their own fluids.

3 All participants are reminded that a helmet is a statutory requirement for the cycle.

4 The event orginiser reserves the right to alter or cancel portions of the event as deemed necessary for safety reasons.

5 Whilst we have not put a minimum amount to be raised we really do urge you to make a pledge to raise as much money as you can whether it be through friends, family work colleuges or indeed you may choose to ask a local business for support.

Sponsor money should be deposited within 14 days after the event. Please send all monies to Sharon Fraser, Gallop and Grind Charity, Innishail, South Laggan, By Spean Bridge, Inverness-shire, PH34 4EA. Telephone 01809 501 489. All cheques should be made payable to Gallop and Grind.

Aid Stations
There will be three main aid stations and marshal points, start Finnish area, Braveheart car park and the turn point on the Cycle.

There is a growing body of evidence that indicates reducing cancer risk can be achieved through health eating, maintaining a health weight and increasing physical activity of which this event initiative is a wonderful example.
