BIG BEN NEVIS TRIATHLON SETS TOUGHEST CHALLENGE TO DATE
No Fuss Events, the people behind the hugely successful ‘Three Tens’ and ‘Relentless 24’ Mountain Bike endurance races announce this year’s Big Ben Nevis Triathlon will take place on Saturday 20th September in the heart of Lochaber, the UK’s Outdoor Capital. Not for the 'Faint Hearted' The Big Ben Nevis Triathlon is a multi—disciplinary sporting challenge for those who like it ‘epic’.
The Big Ben Nevis Triathlon will offer competitors the opportunity to test their skills, stamina and endurance away from smooth, predictable tarmac and calm inland waters of other, more traditional ‘tri’ events, and will pit entrants against the choppy waters of a freezing cold highland sea loch, the long, loose climbs and fast singletrack descents of Glen Nevis, and the final, monster challenge - a hill run, up (and then back down) Ben Nevis, The UK’s highest and most feared mountain.
Competitors will need not only great fitness levels, but also the skills to handle a 90km mountain bike ride on loose, fast trails and the resilience to make it safely up and down the Ben, a constantly changing mass of loose rock. The Big Ben Nevis Triathlon will be demanding enough to challenge even the fittest multi-sport athletes, yet will be accessible for weekend warriors or recreational riders and runners with good fitness levels.
No Fuss Events staged the first Big Ben Nevis Triathlon in 2006. Its success gained it recognition amongst the multi-sport athletes and it has been nominated as a contender for one of the Ten Toughest Triathlons in the UK. In 2006, 39 competitors started the event. In 2007, 70 competitors started the event. Entries are already coming in for the 2008 event.
The Big Ben Nevis Triathlon will test athletes to the limits of their physical and mental strength and endurance, on one of the most rugged and technically challenging courses in the UK. Under the foreboding shadow of Ben Nevis, our intrepid athletes will endure a 1.9km loch swim in the icy waters of Loch Linnhie, a 90km mountain bike ride and a 21km run up, and then back down the slopes of Ben Nevis; The UK’s highest and most awe inspiring mountain. The No Fuss Events team have shaken up the traditional Triathlon format by introducing elements from the extreme ‘x-terra’ triathlon series, such as replacing the road biking with mountain biking and requiring competitors to complete an off-road mountain run, rather than the traditional ‘road run’
Dedication, meticulous preparation and cunning strategy, coupled with extreme mental and physical stamina, will be key requirements for the competitors in this massive test of mind, body and spirit. As with all triathlon events, the ability to overcome the toughest of obstacles and tests, often in the face of exceptional fatigue and cruel weather conditions, will be vital to success.
