HIstory

The first race raised £25.00 which just about bought a pair of boots back in ’73 . The final race raised in the region of £10.000 which only helped to cover the cost of running the busiest team in Scotland with around 70 callouts each year.

The race involves competitors, clad in wet suits, helmets , lifejackets, and with assorted inflatable devices launching themselves into a 1.5 mile stretch of the River Nevis through rapids, over mini waterfalls between rockfaces and with a spectacular jump over a 30ft waterfall and so to the last gasp finish another half mile away.

The prizes consisted of various amounts of locally produced quality whisky and every finisher received a miniture of the same. This was administered purely for medicinal purposes!!

The time taken , depending on the amount of water at the time , can vary from 20min. to over an hour . The state of the water also determines the amount of minor scrapes and bruises in 2008 and 2009 the water levels have been high and participants have enjoyed a thrilling decent of the river. We will have to see what awaits us in 2010.

Every competitor is expected to raise his or her own sponsorship and in the past amounts up to over £1000 have been handed in.

Various factors caused the race to be discontinued not least of these the foot and mouth scare which caused the first ever cancellation. It is hoped that this year will see it reinstated with a young and enthusiastic team of volunteers just like the team themselves who give of their time to go out and help those unfortunate enough to have a problem in our wonderful mountains.

Course

Participants have to negotiate a 2-mile stretch of the icy cold River Nevis on an air-bed (Lilo), navigating the Gurgling Gorge, the Leg Breaker and the Lower Falls Leap!
